The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, a hotel built into the side wall of an abandoned quarry, has opened after a decade of construction.

The "ground-scraper" hotel stretches nearly 290 feet below the cliff. Sixteen of the property's 18 floors are below the cliff, including two underwater.

Among the hotel's 336 rooms and suites is a two-level underwater loft. The living room is encased within a turquoise aquarium where guests are surrounded by schools of fish.

The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland was developed by Shimao Group and is managed by InterContinental Hotels Group.

The hotel is about 19 miles from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.
