Marriott International will expand its City Express by Marriott midscale brand to the U.S. and Canada.

Marriott acquired City Express last year. The brand has 17,000 hotel rooms, mostly in Mexico.

Previously referred to as Project Mid-T by Marriott, the brand expansion is part of the company's continued focus on strengthening its presence in the midscale sector, Marriott said.

The company said the City Express brand is a good fit for hotel conversions, with an opportunity for newbuilds in the future.

"We have been listening closely to our owners and franchisees to design a highly efficient operating model, and we are confident that City Express by Marriott will offer a strong value proposition," said Noah Silverman, Marriott International's global development officer for the U.S. and Canada.

Marriott anticipates having signed agreements and possible City Express hotel openings in the U.S. and Canada over the next few months.
