Intrepid Travel has developed six new tours for single parents
traveling with their children.
The itineraries are intended to give children the
opportunity to bond with other children in the group, while giving a single
parent the opportunity to travel with adults with similar family dynamics.
Intrepid Travel's new tours do not charge a single
supplement. Children ages 17 and younger receive a 10% discount.
Typically, family travel packages "cater to two parents
and two children," said Dyan McKie, Intrepid's brand manager for family
adventures, and a single mom herself. "In many ways, this assumption is
archaic and doesn't reflect today's families. The travel industry caters to so
many niche groups but solo parents have been ignored for too long."
According to United States Census Bureau data cited by
Intrepid, 27% of children under the age of 18 currently live in single-parent
households. Intrepid reported that 16% of its family bookings were made by
single parents for the year ending September 2017. The company said it is getting
an increase in inquiries from single parents.
Intrepid has designed six trips in Costa Rica, Thailand, northern
India, Egypt, Vietnam and Morocco.
The shortest trip is the eight-day Morocco tour, which
starts at $555 per person, and the longest is a 15-day Costa Rica trip, which
starts at $3,185 per person.
