Traditional Tattoo Festival hits Hawaii Island in October

The Traditional Tattoo Festival will be held on the Island of Hawaii from Oct. 25 to 28 at the Kohala Institute. 

The event celebrates the history, traditions, rituals and ceremonies behind tattoo art practiced by Pacific and Arctic cultures such as Hawaiian, Inuit, Maori and Filipino.  

The event includes the main tattoo and cultural festival on Oct. 26, free and open to the public, with demonstrations of traditional tattooing in addition to live music, food, dance performances, kapa (bark cloth) making, wood carving and lau hala (pandanus leaf) weaving. On Oct. 27 and 28 there will be smaller conferences and other events with practitioners, scholars and other select community.
