Illinois could become the next U.S. state to ban hotels from stocking miniature bottles of lotion, shampoo and other toiletries, after the Illinois State Senate passed a bill banning them.

Introduced in January, SB 2960 would prohibit hotels from providing small single-use plastic bottles containing personal care products. The legislation would go into effect for hotels with 50 rooms or more on July 1, 2025, while hotels with less than 50 rooms would be required to follow suit by Jan. 1, 2026.

The bill will proceed to the Illinois House of Representatives.

SB 2960 follows similar bans by other U.S. states, including California, which became the first to crack down on single-use hotel toiletry bottles last year.

New York has also passed a ban on single-use hotel toiletry bottles, which went into effect on Jan. 1 for hotels with 50 rooms or more and will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2025 for hotels with less than 50 rooms.

Last year, Washington State passed a measure requiring hotels with 50 rooms or more to phase out single-use toiletry bottles by Jan. 1, 2027. Those with under 50 rooms have until Jan. 1, 2028 to comply.
