A gunman entered the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington shortly before 1 p.m. today and exchanged gunfire with security guards at the museum killing one of the guards, according to published reports.

The security guard, part of a private security team employed by the museum, was taken to George Washington University Hospital where he later died, museum officials have confirmed.

The gunman was also taken to the same hospital and was listed as in critical condition, said Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty during a news conference.

The gunman and one security guard were wounded by the gunfire and taken to George Washington University Hospital, according to ABC News. The security guard has been listed as being in "grave" condition, while the gunman is in critical condition, said Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty during a news conference.

A third person was wounded by flying glass and treated at the scene, according to ABC News.

The museum, located south of the National Mall and near the Washington Monument, has been evacuated and will remain closed Thursday, to honor the slain security guard.
