Maui Ocean Center has introduced a new technology-driven exhibit that takes visitors into the underwater world of humpback whales.
The Humpbacks of Hawaii exhibit includes a show in the new 120-seat theater, The Sphere, which combines 3D glasses and 4K laser imagery for an immersive visual experience.
"Until now, people have only observed humpback whales from above the ocean's surface, witnessing their power and size during their infamous breaches," Tapani Vuori, general manager of Maui Ocean Center, said in a statement. "Our exhibit transports guests deep into the ocean, giving them an inside look into the complex and vibrant lives of Maui's humpback whales, and allowing them to forge new connections with one of nature's greatest marvels."
The exhibit details the whales' nomadic lifestyle, taking participants inside the songs, signals and social bonds that shape their lives. Guests can learn about humpback whale migration through interactive exhibits.
The whales featured in the sphere were filmed in Maui waters over two seasons under the supervision of and with permits granted by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The Humpbacks of Hawaii Exhibit and Sphere is open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and showings run every half hour with no reservations required.
The Maui Ocean Center, opened in 1998, exclusively features animals native to Hawaii and includes the largest collection of live Pacific coral in the world, outdoor tidepools, and a 750,000-gallon open ocean exhibit with a 240-degree viewing tunnel.
