The Coco Palms Resort, ruined by a hurricane in 1992, is now scheduled for renovation and reopening.

On the east side of Kauai, the Coco Palms Resort opened in 1953 with 20 rooms and sits on property that was once home to Kauai's last monarch, Queen Deborah Kapule Kekaihaakulou.

The property, which was featured in the 1961 film "Blue Hawaii" starring Elvis Presley, was hit hard by Hurricane Iniki in 1992 and forced to close. Now, the resort will join the roster of properties under the Unbound Collection by Hyatt banner.

The renovation project is expected to cost $135 million, and will result in a 363-room hotel with three restaurants, banquet facilities and other amenities on the 46-acre plot.

Remaining structures on the property were demolished in 2016. Construction work is slated to begin soon, and the resort is expected to reopen in 2018.
